허리의 뼈와 뼈 사이에서 충격 흡수를 담당하고 있는 추간판(디스크)이 탈출하면서 신경을 압박하여 통증을 일으키는 질환입니다.
허리뼈 사이에는 디스크가 있어 충격을 흡수하는 역할을 합니다. 하지만 이 디스크에 반복되는 압력이나 충격이 가해지면 뒤로 밀려나오거나 터지게 되는데, 이 과정에서 척추의 신경을 압박하게 됩니다. 척추의 신경을 자극하게 되면, 다리쪽으로 심한 통증이나 저림증상, 힘이 빠지는 증상 등이 나타납니다.
허리디스크의 주로 퇴행성 변화로 인해 발생되지만, 교통사고나 갑작스러운 충격에 의해서도 발생합니다. 특히 서있는 것보다 오래 앉아 있는 것, 그리고 잦은 음주나 흡연, 스트레스 등이 허리에 부담을 주게 되어 병을 악화시키기 쉽습니다.
최근에는 학업이나 컴퓨터 업무 등 좌식생활이 늘어남에 따라 발병하는 연령이 급격히 낮아지고 있는 추세입니다.
